Introduction
Organizations faced a daunting challenge—managing and extracting meaningful insights from the vast volumes of patent documents. These documents, often structured & semi-structured , held crucial information but were buried under layers of complexity. Our enterprise has worked on an usecase, a transformative portal designed to revolutionize patent management.
Overview of Usecase
The usecase is about to explore the IT IP asset database and identify applicable inventions, production
methods, or connections between current innovations and existing IP assets. We developed a chatbot integrated with their IT IP data. Our aim is to enhance the user experience by creating a portal where users can easily access and compare existing IP assets for their current innovation projects. Additionally, leveraging the language model to provide suggestions based on the existing data, such as proposing new use cases and identifying gaps between current innovations.
Our main goal was to built an Enterprise search portal with GenAI capabilities for effective usage. In the portal which we have built, there is search functionality, which allows users to enter queries and retrieve relevant patent information from the indexed data efficiently. There is a filter section where, users can refine their searches with input-based criteria, ensuring precise results tailored to their needs; Generative AI Capabilities, where the portal provides simplified summaries for a clear and accessible overview of patent details and the Patent Chatbot, which used Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework, which answers patent-related queries instantly as well as, offers document similarity analysis based on user inputs.
Amazon SageMaker Models
In other usecases, we relied on Amazon SageMaker to integrate various cutting-edge models for tasks like summarization, question answering, and document similarity. We used various Hugging Face models like all-MiniLM, BERT, and RoBERTa, Open-source models such as GPT-2 and LLaMA , Proprietary models like Titan Embedding Models, GPT-3, GPT-3.5 & GPT-4, and Claude.
Challenges with Amazon SageMaker Models
Using these Sagemaker models has lead to various obstacles, such as more setup for deploying, fine-tuning, and scaling models; often required dedicated infrastructure for hosting and training models lead to higher upfront and ongoing costs; More general-purpose, requires additional steps for generative AI use cases; it required configuring endpoint autoscaling, infrastructure selection, and monitoring; Often involved a longer development cycle for training and deploying custom models and also Security configurations for training data, models, and endpoints required more setup.

AWS Bedrock
- AWS Bedrock which emerged as a game-changing platform which simplified the access to foundational models, pay-as-you-go pricing, No Need for Model Training, focuses more on generative AI tasks, faster deployment. AWS Bedrock offers several advantages:
- Bedrock provides seamless access to pre-trained foundational models (FMs) from leading providers like Amazon Titan, Anthropic Claude, AI21, and Cohere without requiring infrastructure management.
- Bedrock offers pay-as-you-go pricing, eliminating infrastructure management overhead and reducing operational costs. On-demand usage removes the need for extensive compute resources for training or hosting.
- Access to state-of-the-art, pre-trained models optimized for tasks like summarization, Q&A, classification, and more. Fine-tuning is optional and requires minimal effort.
- Users can interact with models from multiple providers without locking into a single ecosystem.
- Optimized for generative AI applications, including text summarization, content creation, conversational agents, and embedding generation.
- Automatic scalability management for inference workloads eliminates the need to maintain clusters.
- Pre-built models reduce time-to-market for AI-powered solutions by bypassing lengthy training and fine-tuning processes.
- Enterprise-grade security features integrated with AWS IAM and encryption services ensure compliance and data protection.
Final Thoughts:
SageMaker remains an exceptional platform for custom model development and end-to-end ML workflows. However, AWS Bedrock stands out with its unparalleled ease of use, lower operational costs, faster deployment, and dedicated focus on generative AI tasks. These advantages are precisely why we made the strategic decision to shift towards Bedrock models for this as well as for all our future use cases, enabling us to deliver quick, scalable, and highly efficient generative AI solutions that align seamlessly with our business needs and innovation goals.
